The knightly cavalry managed to repel Saladin's first attack, but lost many horses. However, more important was the fact that the morale of the Christian army was broken and some of the crusaders began to retreat eastward.

Muslim sources indicate that the thirsty foot soldiers headed for Lake Galilee, which was much further than the spring at Hattin. Christian chronicles insist that the infantry tried to reach the Horns of Hattin. What sources on both sides and most modern scholars refuse to explain is how the Crusaders intended to achieve their goal when the center of Saladin's army was located in their way.
